Hong Kong Institute of Carbon Emission Reduction and Energy Management (ICEREM) is a professional association comprising experts, academics and students interested in the field of energy management and ways of reducing carbon emissions in Hong Kong and the region. The Institute was formed in September 2009 and currently has members from tertiary institutions, businesses and others in science research and the education sector.
Back in early 2009, a group of students of the Environmental Studies Programme at the Open University of Hong Kong saw the need to relate theories and practices learnt at the university to practical measures in daily lives and in the various fields under their influence. Prof. Ho Kin Chung, Dean of School of Science and Technology of OUHK, has always been keen to encourage students and environmental practitioners to take part in research and promotion of proper environmental causes. Under Prof. Ho’s encouragement, the group discussed the possibility of setting up a learning association.
In light of the on-going challenges of climate change and the need to raise the awareness of the younger generations in reducing carbon footprints, it was decided that a professional Institute focusing on the promotion of carbon emission reduction and efficient energy management to be formed. With these objectives, the group of students also invited other academic staff and tutors of the University to take part. The Institute would initially focus on activities and programmes for the education and scientific sectors, but would eventually extend to other parts of the community including the business sector. ICEREM was hence officially launched on 19 September, 2009.
Under the initial thinking, ICEREM would like to:
- Develop a few model schools that could achieve ZERO Carbon Emissions and Total Water Management. These schools can then be served as models for others in the education sector.
- Initiate research on technologies in stabilizing or freezing carbon emissions, e.g. through researches on algal or wastewater capture technologies at OUHK.
- Urge and work with the government and business sectors to develop energy efficiency projects and Zero Carbon technologies in Hong Kong and China.
The Institute is currently chaired by Mr. Jake, C.W. LEE and has the following Council Members :
Mr. Jake, C.W. LEE (President)
